Bragging Rights
Bear with me while I make my through a lovely compliment I received today about one of my face cleansers. I summarized the email thread to the biggest warm fuzzy I’ve received in awhile.
To My Dearest Skin Care Specialist (that’s me),
I am so so so happy with that facewash!! I just feel like this has made the texture of my skin so nice. I also suggested Alex use it too. It’s been so long since I have been able to look in the mirror and not scoff at my damn skin, that I am happy as a clam. I think everyone should try it. I’ve come to really love the way the cleanser leaves my skin feeling so good!!

And with that, I have my first official product/gift order for face wash, serum and scrub.
Everything Peacock Apothecary has been somewhat put on the back burner while Tadd and I finish our kitchen remodel and plan the wedding. Thank you Caitlyn for kicking me back into high gear and inspiring me to keep on trekking.
And on that note, I have big plans to spend a bunch of time in the kitchen making holiday gifts in the form of lotions, scrubs and soaps. If anyone would like to order product for the holidays, please let me know.

Project: Just The Senses
To truly enjoy the long weekend, I made a rule for Sunday - No TV, No Music Making, No Work, Just Relaxing. We started the day off at the farmer’s market which led into a trip to Bay Cities for some sandwich heaven and fresh pasta for later. After laying in the sun and napping, I cooked an Italian meal from scratch. Continuing with the sentiment of “the rules”, I didn’t use any canned food or measuring cups and cooked purely by sense alone. I tackled one of my favorite dishes - Vodka Sauce with Fresh Pasta and Bay Cities bread for mopping. While waiting for the sauce to do it’s magic, Tadd and I enjoyed a Nero D’Avola (my favorite grape for wine!) and listened to An American Analog Set. It was a perfect little vacation from our usual routine filled with lots of love. Recipe Below:
Ingredients
-A mix of fresh Tomatoes from the farmer’s market. I used a few Romas, 1 large heirloom and a beefsteak
-Fresh Basil
-1 Onion
-Garlic
-Vodka
-Cream
-Salt and Pepper
-Fresh Pasta
-Parmesan (Get a good one! none of that Trader Joe’s plastic cheese stuff)
-Fresh Loaf of Bread
1. Chop the onions and garlic (I used about 4-5 cloves) and saute in a few tablespoons of Olive Oil (eye ball it). Cook until the onions look translucent and then add the Vodka (eye ball it but approx 1/3-1/2 cup). Keep on cooking for a few minutes until the vodka cooks down.
2. Chop the tomatoes and add to the pan with the onions, garlic and vodka.
3. Season with Salt and Hot Red Pepper
4. Simmer until the tomatoes break down and you have a tasty sauce in your pan (I let mine cook for about an hour). You can’t top the taste of fresh sauce that didn’t come from canned tomatoes!
5. Once the sauce looks good, continue to cook it down while you boil water for your pasta.
6. Once you start to cook the pasta, add the cream to the sauce. Make sure the heat is very low at this point. Add the cream slowly and just keep mixing the sauce until it reaches the color and consistency you want. I like my sauce to be more on the pink side as opposed to pastel.
7. Add chopped basil and any additional seasoning to the sauce
8. Once the pasta is done cooking and drainded (should only take 3 mins) add the sauce to the pasta and toss.
9. Top with Parmesan and serve with Bread
Cooking by sense is much more satisfying and full of intention as opposed to following a recipe. I plan to have more nights like this in the future.
Project: Refinish Dresser
Oh how I love long weekends; they seem to inspire productivity and I finally had the motivation I needed to finally refinish my wood, Pottery Barn dresser. I’ve had this dresser since I was in high school and it needed some attention to mesh with the color scheme in our new bedroom. I opted for white Milk Paint - it’s a powder blend of pigment that you have to mix at home and it’s the only true non-toxic paint. The project was much easier then I had anticipated; I simply removed the hardware, sanded the wood stain, mixed the paint and applied two coats. Milk Paint naturally gives an antiqued finished and I can’t wait to experiment with their Crackle finish.
My new obsession is Walnut Oil. The nutty flavored oil actually made me excited to eat a salad last night. Words can’t express how flavorful La Nogalera’s Walnut Oil really is. If you live on the Westside and frequent the Mar Vista Farmer’s Market, I highly suggest picking up a bottle of this stuff.
And now for the most delicious salad dressing recipe I have ever tasted:
1 small clove garlic
1 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice
1/4 tsp. salt
3 Tbsp. walnut oil
1 Tsp Dijon mustard
1/2 tsp. fresh tarragon, finely chopped, or dried tarragon
And now for the icing on the cake!
Walnut Oil is one of the highest natural sources of omega 3 found in nature: more than 1.4g of omega 3 per serving. Canada Omega 3 RDI: 1.5g per day.
Here’s a little trick for preserving the life of your fresh herbs…treat them like fresh flowers! When you bring them home from the market, trim off a 1/2 inch of the stems at an angle and keep them in fresh water (I use mason jars) and store them in the fridge. Usually my fresh herbs start to wilt after a few days but now my parsley looks like I just brought it home and it’s been in my fridge for over a week!
Soaptopia

I finally made a trip to this handmade soap haven last week when I was in desperate need of some soap but didn’t have the time to make my own. I must say, they make a lovely product at a reasonable price for such a big piece of soap. Each bar is made with a base of olive oil, shea butter, hemp seed oil, coconut oil, palm oil, avocado oil and essential oils (big plus to Soaptopia for not using fragrance oils). They’re animal friendly, eco-friendly, vegan, synthetic free and petroleum free. The result is a yummy soap that lathers really nicely and doesn’t dry my skin. I’m making my way through my 5 bar selection for 25 dollars. It will probably take me about 3 months to finish all of them.
If you live in LA, I highly recommend making a trip to their store where everything is handmade made. They’re located at 12228 1/2 Venice Blvd / Mar Vista, CA 90066
